What is IP telephony?

IP Telephony or Voice over Internet Protocol a method of voice communication using broadband or other data connectivity to carry voice calls instead of the traditional PSTN services such as analogue or ISDN lines that are connected via your local telephone exchange.

Voice signals are converted into data packets exactly the same way as emails and images are converted into data and sent over the internet or a direct connection to another computer and reconverted back to voice. The IP handset works as the computer to convert the voice.

As there is no longer a dependency on a local exchange there is now a lot more flexibility in numbering, meaning that your business phone number is no longer tied to the local exchange. All of a businesses’ working sites, no matter where located can now be part of the single dial plan and can be linked together as a business does with it’s email and other network wide programmes.

As data services become more and more reliable as well as faster and cheaper the case for using IP telephony rather than traditional inflexible services becomes stronger.

Lease line uptime of 99.999% is now commonplace and even ordinary broadband seldom suffers from prolonged outage. All of this removes the perceived risk from using VoIP.

Connectivity and call quality

IP telephony relies on a data connection to make and receive that voice calls. If the data service is not adequate the call quality may be below par. We will always advise as to the best connection and may not supply a service if we feel that the connection will not allow high quality voice conversation.

Whilst this service can be very cost efficient it is not a free service, such as those offered to domestic customers by Skype and others. It is specifically a business to business service and we do not offer it to domestic customers. If we do supply the connectivity we can monitor the preformance and adjust as required to maintain quality.

In these times of soaring fuel costs and the call from all parties for more home-based working and video use, this product is ideally positioned to allow companies, regardless of size, to deploy solutions that were previously only available to large businesses with a substantial in-house IT team.
